Coal is obtained from mining from underground mines. Charcoal is obtained from incomplete burning of trees and wood.
Charcoal has less calorific value as it is semi burnt. Charcoal remains hot and holds fire for a longer time.
Charcoal is easily available. It is softer. It needs less heat to burn it.
Charcoal is cheaper and is probably available in smaller amounts.
Charcoal burns cleaner way than coal (produces harmful gases).
Charcoal burns completely with just ash remaining.
For home purposes charcoal is easier and for industrial purposes they procure high grade or low grade coal as they want. Coal gives a higher temperature than charcoal.
