Quantum number is used to define the energy shells or levels available in any atom or molecule.
Explanation:
- Any atom that has four quantum numbers can be described using the Schrödinger wave equation.
- There are eight steps to measuring the Quantum number of an atom.
- You have to count the orbits than add in electrons to these.
- Determine sub shells using the Angular Quantum number. Now add electrons in these shells.
- Now find out the orientation of these shells and its number.
- Finally, add 2 electrons to every possible orientation of the previous sum.
For example Hydrogen 2S1/2, Helium 1S0, Lithium 2S1/2, Boron 2P1/2, Carbon 3P0, Nitrogen 4S3/2, Oxygen 3P2, Fluorine 2P3/2 etc
