Hello,
The glucose is broken down to form energy in each and every cell.
But,
The process of breakdown varies from organism to organism.
1) aerobic breakdown takes place in presence of oxygen
2)anaerobic breakdown takes place in the absence of oxygen
Anaerobic breakdown also has two division :-
1) in yeast.
2) in muscle cell.
First lets look the aerobic one :-
First process is glycolysis which takes place without oxygen.
In this the glucose is converted in pyruvate that is a three carbon molecule compound.
After this,
Pyruvate ----oxygen---> co2 + water + energy
Here, the energy is in the form of ATP
To be more specific, around 32 molecules of ATP is generated.
Now,
Anaerobic breakdown......
In YEAST :-
After glycolysis, the steps followed are :-
Pyruvate ---no oxygen--> ethanol + energy
In MUSCLE :-
After glycolysis, in the cytoplasm only this process takes place where energy is released without complete oxidation of the food.
The steps followed are :-
Pyruvate ---no oxygen----> lactic acid + energy
In this process only 2 molecules of ATP is generated.
Hope this will be helping you.....
