3Fe +4H_{2} O \to Fe_{3} O_{4} +4 H_{2}

When steam is passed over red hot iron ,it gets converted to its magnetic oxide(Fe3O4  which is Magnetite) and hydrogen gas is liberated.

But now the liberated hydrogen gas reacts with the magnetic oxide back to give iron and steam.

Thus , this reaction can proceed continuously.

Hope it helps!

Explanation:

The reaction

  1. Iron is less reactive than zinc but redhot iron reacts with steam forming triferric tetra oxide and hydrogen gas
  2. This reaction is reversible. If the hydrogen formed is not removed the iron oxide formed is reduced back to iron
