There are two types of reactions taking place at electrodes, cathode and anode, which are ;

1.Oxidation

2.Reduction

In electrolytic cell, on applying electric potential, the positive ions migrate towards the negative electrode, called cathode and the negative ions move towards the positive electrode, called anode.

At anode , the negative ions give up electrons and are , therefore, oxidized…

At cathode, the positive ions pick up electrons and are, therefore, reduced…

Thus, during electrolytic conduction, oxidation takes place at anode and reduction takes place at cathode. The liquid will continue to conduct electricity only as long as oxidation-reduction reactions occuring at the electrodes, continue.

At cathode, deposition of metal occurs by gaining electrons (reduction) and at anode, discharge of ions takes place by loss of electrons (oxidation)
