Rainbow is formed due to refraction of light rays through water .

When a body passes through a body with a different density than the one it was traveling in previously , the velocity of the light ray changes , causing it to bend .

The bending of light is termed as refraction .

Ex :

When light rays [ of the sun ] pass through drops of water , they undergo refraction and hence , the light scatters on the basis of the different wavelengths into seven colours - Violet , Indigo , Blue , Green , Yellow , Orange , Red .

This combination of colors is what we call as a rainbow .
