Answer:

The principal quantum number, n, describes the energy of an electron and the most probably distance of the electron from the nucleus. In other words , it refers to the size of the orbitaland the energy level an electron is paced in. The number of subshells or I describes the shape of the prbital

Answer:

For a given principle quantum number (n), azimuthal quantum number (l) will be lie in range of 0 and n-1.

Explanation:

  • Principle quantum number  represents the size of the orbital. It gives the information of about the energy of level in which electron is placed. It is represented by 'n' and always a natural number 1,2,3......so on.
  • Azimuthal quantum number represents the shape of the orbital. It gives the information about the total orbital angular momentum. It is represented by 'l'. Azimuthal quantum number tells the electron is present in s, p, d or f -orbital which have different shapes. The value of l are 0,1,2,3.......so on.
  • For given value of n, the value of l will be 0  to n-1. Therefore l has (n-1) possible values.
  • For example: for n=4, l = 0, 1, 2, 3.
