if we apply mechanical energy conservation [ only when the external force is not acting] then amount of energy stored by the object in term of potential energy is converted into kinetic energy without any loss

The force due to the conservative field is downwards and in the opposite direction to the ditection in which the mass is move upward a distance , so the work done by the force due to the conservative field is − m g h and that by definition is minus the change in potential energy
