Answer:

Rutherford's model shows that an atom is mostly empty space, with electrons orbiting a fixed, positively charged nucleus in set, predictable paths

Upon Rutherford's 1911 analysis, that J. J. Thomson's plum pudding model of the atom was incorrect. Rutherford's new model for the atom, based on the experimental results, contained new features of a relatively high central charge concentrated into a very small volume in comparison to the rest of the atom and with this central volume also containing the bulk of the atomic mass of the atom. This region would be known as the "nucleus" of the atom.

Explanation:

Ernest rutherford was intrested in knowing how electrons are arranged within an atom.

  • he selected gold foil which was 1000atoms thick.
  • alpha particles were double charged helium ions.its fast moving alpha particle had considerable amount of energy.
  • it was expected that alpha particles will deflected by sub atomic particles in gold atom.alpha particles were much heavier than protons, he didnt expected to see large deflection.
  • but alpha particle scatering experiment gave unexpected result which were
  1. most of fast moving alpha particles passe straight through gold foil
  2. some of alpha particles erre deflected by foil by small angles
  3. one out of every 12000 particles appeared to rebound

Rutherford put forward nuclear model of an atom which had following features:

  1. there is positively chargef centre in an atom called nucleus. Nearly all mass of an atom resides in nucleus.
  2. The electrons revolve around nucleus in circular motion.
  3. The size of nucleus is very small as compared to size of atom.

Drawbacks of rutherfords model of atom are

  1. Revolution of electron in circular orbit is not stable.
  2. Any particle in circular orbit undergo acceleration. During acceleration charged particles would radiate energy.
  3. Thus, revolving electron would lose energy and fall into nucleus.
  4. If this were so, Atom should be highly unstable and hence matter would not exist in form that we know.
