- The scientific name's of methanogen bacteria are Methanobacterium formicium, Methano-coccus vannielli, and Methanosarcina barkeri.
- These bacteria are generally found in several extreme conditions/environments on Earth – buried deep down in the ice of Greenland or living in hot/dry desert soil.
- Methanogens are the only group of microorganisms on earth producing significant amounts of methane. They are unique in terms of metabolism and energy conservation. In biogas plants, due to hydrolysis of complex polymers to sugar and amino acids, followed by fermentation and acetogenesis by this Methanogen Bacteria, H₂ and CO₂ are produced as substrates for methanogenesis or for the production of biogas.

Methanogens grow and anaerobically on cellulosic material and produce large amount of Methane along with carbon dioxide and hydrogen .Since biogas is a mixture of Methane and carbon dioxide so, Methanogens helps in production of biogas .
