Heya Mate ❤ Here's the answer

Fractional distillation is the process of separating two (or more) miscible liquids by distillation, the distillate being collected in fractions boiling at different temperatures.

This separation depends on the boiling point of the two liquids.

It is carried by using a fractionating column.

Ex.- alcohol and water are miscible liquids but both are having different boiling points i.e. 78°C & 100°C respectively. So for their separation fractional distillation has to be carried out. The mixture of alcohol and water is heated in a distillation tank fitted with a fractionating column. When the mixture is heated, both alcohol and water form vapours as their boiling points approach. The alcohol vapour & water vapour rise up in fractionating column. The upper part of the fractionating column is cooler, so as the hot vapours rise up in the column, they get cooled, condense and trickle back into the distillation flask.

Hope it helps☺️☺️

separation of miscible liquids can be done by

  • distillation- separation of only two miscible liquids
  • fractional distillation-separation of two or more miscible liquids based upon their boiling point
  • chromatographic processes-separation of two or more liquids on the basis of their viscosity
