Mathematicians use the word "SET" for a well defined collection ofbobjects. So , a set in a well defined collection of distinct objects. Each object is said to be an element (or number) of the set.

There are two methods of describing a set. These are :-

(i) Tabular method (or Roster method)

(ii) Rule method (or Selector method)

(i) Tabular method (or Roster method) :-

The tabular method is the general way of designating a set in which the elements of set are listed in any order with bracket { } and being separated by commas.

For example :-

If V is the set of vowels of English alphabet then it is written under this method as

V = { a , e , i , o , u }

(ii) Rule method (or Selector method) :-

In this method , x is used to represent the elements of the set which satisfy a definite propertt say P(x) and the set is expressed symbolically as { x : P(x) } OR, { x | P(x) } i.e. , the set of all those elements x which satisfies property P(x).

For example :-

If V is the set of vowels of English alphabet then it is written under this method as

V = { x : x is a vowel of English alphabet }
