The shape of the bat was like a honey stick which was round from the end and it was used because it was easier for the players to connect the bat with a ball and another reason was that bowlers used to bowl underarm so it was easier for the players to hit the ball with this shape.

The game of cricket altogether changed along with its rules and equipments from its inception to present day.
The shape of early cricket bats was like a hockey-stick. Like hockey-stick, it was curved at the bottom. The two facts or reasons which support that why this shape was adopted are :
1. Bowlers used to ball underarm, along the ground. This shape was most suitable to hit on such a kind of bowling.
2. This kind of shape also helped the batsman to connect bat with the ball more easily.
