Mr. Van Daan is the head of one of the families, which helps the Franks to escape and go into hiding. He is in the meat and sausage trade.

He is often short tempered, but gets along fairly well with Anne Frank. He is found to be selfish especially in matters of food and has the largest portion most of the time, seldom thinking of the others. He has the attitude of knowing everything – be it politics or finance. These traits as well as their dwindling finances, are often the cause of quarrel between him and Mrs. Van Daan.

But he has his good side too and is more level-headed than Mrs. Van Daan.
