Pressure flow hypothesis also known as mass flow hypothesis was proposed to explain the ascent of sap.

Explanation:

Phloem contains high concentration of organic substances (solutes such as sucrose) which creates a osmotic gradient that leads to osmotic entry of water into the xylem from the nearby cells. This leads to formation of turgor pressure in the phloem. This leads to the movement of solutes due to mass flow. The ascent of sap occurs from source to sink. Source is the part of the plant that is producing sugar and the part of the plant receiving sugar is sink.
