1/f = 1/v + 1/u

f positive for converging lens(eg convex lens) or mirror(concave), negative for diverging lens(concave lens) or convex mirror.

image distance v is positive for real image, negative for virtual image.

object distance u positive for real object, negative for virtual object.

One might wonder how the hell a virtual object is even possible. Well it could be a virtual image(behind the mirror) of a real object in a system of mirrors for example:).
