Meiosis is significant for sexually reproducing organisms.

Suppose ,2x chromosomes are present in a organism

if the organism reproduce directly then 2x+2x=4x. This could lead to abnormality.

Thus making the chromosome number half, we can make offspring normal with same set of chromosomes as parent.

2x+2x/2=2x

☞ Meiosis is the mechanism by which conservation of specific chromosome number of each species is achieved across generations in sexually reproducing in organisms even though the process.

☞ Its also increases the genetic variability in the population of organisms from one generation to next.

☞ Variations are very important for the process of evolution.
