The chemical process by which plants and some organisms, using sunlight, produce nutrients from water and carbon dioxide is known as Photosynthesis.

In photosynthesis, light energy is absorbed by Chlorophyll (the green pigmentation found in leaves and some stems) in the plant cells, to produce ATP and to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This sub-process is called Photolysis.
