Differences and similarities between Sarpanch and Patla:

A gram panchayat/village panchayat is the grassroots-level of the 'Panchayati Raj' formalised 'local self-governance system' (governmental jurisdictions below the state level) in India at the 'small-town or village level.

A Sarpanch is a decision-maker, elected by the village-level 'constitutional body of local self-government' called the 'Gram Panchayat'.

The Sarpanch, together with other elected Panchayat members, comprise the gram panchayat. The Sarpanch is the pivotal contact point between govt. officers and village community and maintains power for 5 years.

The gram panchayat is split into wards and each ward is represented by a Commissioner/Ward Member also known as Panch/ Panchayat Member, who is elected by the villagers.

The Sarpanch along with the Panchs discuss and resolve various issues, concerns, and perform such other roles/functions like execute govt. schemes related to employment, levying and collecting taxes, maintaining and constructing water resources, drainage, roads, CPR (common property resources), and school buildings.
