This region is made up of the alluvial plains of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and is drained towards the east by the Ganga and its tributaries. The plain forms a 1050 km. long east-west corridor between the Himalayas to the north and the Plateau of Peninsular India to the south.

Its eastern limit is demarcated by the West Bengal Plain and the western by the Yamuna. About one-fourth of the entire population of India lives in this fertile plain.
