Answer:

My neighbor paid $1000 for a kitten. It was a cute kitten, a 'bengal,' that someone had bred in their garage for profit. He dumped it with me whenever it had continuing and uncontrollable diarrhea. You see, the breeder didn't want to cut into profit by getting healthy breeding stock, or by giving the animals veterinary care, or by giving them clean water, apparently. The kitten had one of the worst cases of giardia the vet had ever seen, and the organization that I worked for was never able to adopt him out because he has severe GI tract issues. He's gorgeous. He's unadoptable. And he's also one of many, because people keep giving the breeder $1000 a kitten to keep going. If no one bought her kittens, then would she keep breeding them? I am inclined to think not. If enough people had said no to her from the get-go, that poor kitten would not be living in constant discomfort.

My aunt has three purebred dogs from breeders. All three have overly-excitable personalities, are prone to sickness and need constant vet visits, and are, forgive me, less than intelligent. They spend inordinate amounts of money trying to fix the dogs' breathing issues and hip dysplasia. She spent quite a bit of money just to acquire them.

I have two cats and two dogs. We just put our 12 year old pit bull down last week because of kidney disease. He never cost me a cent in vet bills until his last month. His sister is still trucking, and has never been sick. Same with our GSD/Husky mix. The two cats have never been sick, either. All of them were young, and all had shots and were spayed/neutered or had vouchers when we got them. Every last one has had a wonderful personality, and been a valuable and grateful member of our family.
