The standard form of quadratic equation in variable x is ax²+bx+c = 0, where a, b, c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.

 \:

Example :-

2x²+x-300 = 0 is a quadratic equation,

Similarly, 2x²-3x+1=0, 4x-3x²+2=0 and 1-x²+300=0 are also quadratic equations.

Infact, any equation of the form p(x) = 0, where p(x) is a polynomial of degree 2, is a quadratic equation. When we write the terms of p(x) in descending order of their degrees, then we get the standard form of the equation. That is, ax²+bx+c = 0, a≠0 is called the standard form of a quadratic equation and y = ax²+bx+c is called a quadratic function.

Standard Form of Quadratic Equation

The standard form of quadratic equation is ax² + bx + c = 0, where 'a' is the leading coefficient and it is a non-zero real number. This equation is called "quadratic" as its degree is 2 because "quad" means "square". Apart from standard form of quadratic equation, a quadratic equation can be written in several other forms.

  • Vertex Form: a (x - h)² + k = 0
  • Vertex Form: a (x - h)² + k = 0Intercept Form: a (x - p)(x - q) = 0

Let us learn more about the standard form of a quadratic equation and also we will see how to convert one form of a quadratic equation into another.

What is the Standard Form of Quadratic Equation?

The standard form of quadratic equation in a variable x is of the form ax² + bx + c = 0, where a ≠ 0, and a, b, and c are real numbers. Here, b and c can be either zeros or non-zero numbers and

  • 'a' is the coefficient of x²
  • 'a' is the coefficient of x²'b' is the coefficient of x
  • 'a' is the coefficient of x²'b' is the coefficient of x'c' is the constant

Examples of Standard Form of Quadratic Equation

Here are some examples of quadratic equation in standard form.

  • 2x2 - 7x + 8 = 0
  • 2x2 - 7x + 8 = 0(-1/3) x2 + 2x - 1 = 0
  • 2x2 - 7x + 8 = 0(-1/3) x2 + 2x - 1 = 0x2 - 8 = 0
  • 2x2 - 7x + 8 = 0(-1/3) x2 + 2x - 1 = 0x2 - 8 = 0-3x2 + 8x = 0
