There are sequential steps in the transmission and generation of the nervous impulse.

- firstly there is entry of sodium inside the neurone resulting in the depolarization of the neuron.
- The sodium ion move in the forward direction. As a result of this the resulting part of the neurone becomes repolarization due to the entry of the potassium inside the neurone.
- This follows a wave. as a result of this the nerve impulse is transmitted from the site on of the cell to the axon endplate where the neurotransmitters are released resulting in the the propagation of the impulse to the next neurone or to the muscles
