Just for the heck of it, find your typing speed here: .

Firstly, spend a week or more on remembering where all the letters and basic punctuation marks are located. (If you already remember, skip to the point after the keyboard-image!) It is easier than you think since you kind of already know most of the keys. Below is how you should proceed:

Type correctly. Currently your speed might be around 20-30 Words Per Minute through your technique, i.e. using only index fingers (that's just a guess, as most of the people do that, including the past-me.) STOP IT.

Always place your finger in the correct position. Just remember F and J for the index finger of both hands.

Notice two small bumps on keys "F" and "J" in your keyboard? That's to find those keys without even looking at them!

Your typing speed will drop drastically once you change your style, you will surely feel uncomfortable doing it. Don't worry, it increases drastically later on.

Now just pick up your favorite newspaper/magazine or novel and open Microsoft Word or any other word processor you like. Practice. Just remember which keys are supposed to be pressed with which finger. You don't have to remember this as well because you can guess them almost all the time. This one is just for the reference:

Now I assume you have practiced enough and you remember the key-positions (pun intended!). That's 90% of the work done! Now you just need to improve your speed.

Now go to . Race a couple of times to find out your average speed. Here you are racing real time with real people (sometimes there are bots racing with you, but you'll find racers most of the time). Good thing is, you are almost always racing with people in your league, people who have the same speed as you do.

After you get the hang of the website, register yourself. Start racing. Keep racing everyday, at least 10-20 races everyday. That's just 15 minutes on an average, and it's really fun, trust me!

Now while surfing facebook, et cetera, you can open typeracer in a different tab and do a couple of races whenever you feel like it. Continue this for a few months and one day you'll notice your speed has jumped up to 80 words per minute. You'll never see it coming! Compare it with the speed your recorded in the first point.

Extras:

I achieved the 80 WPM speed in just 5 months of my using the website. And to be honest, I never used it to improve the speed, etc. I just liked racing there!

Blue line shows the average of my last 100 races and the Orange line shows my complete average over time.

Protips:

Don't bang your keyboard thinking more sound equals more speed. Try to be as silent and subtle as possible.

Don't try to skip races in typeracer just because the paragraph is very long or words are difficult, or you are losing the current race. Your objective is not to increase your ranking in typeracer, but to improve your typing.

Looking at the keyboard should be your last resort. Don't do it even if you can win the race!
