The answer is:-

Literally, the proverb talks about birds. It is common to see large groups of birds flying together. They feed, move and flock together. We cannot see a sparrow in the group of pigeons. Similarly, there are no flying birds amidst the water birds. You cannot see an eagle with a flock of ducks. What this means is that those of the same kind will flock together. You cannot force a different bird into the same-bird group. It will not fit it. This is similar to humans. People join and accompany the friendship of those in their same character. You cannot have a friendship with someone completely different in character with you.

Similarly, when birds fly away to long distances, they go in flocks. This is because, only with their species, they can be comfortable and travel. This is how humans also act. Those with similar habits and interests form friendships and associate with each another. They might not feel comfortable with others of the different character. So, in order to have lasting friendships, you have to choose people having similar character and outlooks. Only then you can accompany them in the long-run.

The proverb also has a deeper meaning. A man’s character can be determined by the company he keeps. A wicked person will be seen in the company of wicked. A religious person cannot be found in the group of drunkards. Moreover, when you are accompanying with refined men, you are sure to become refined as well. Likewise, a character of a man is enhanced by the friendships he forms.

Thus, the proverb is a metaphorical phrase, stating human character with that of birds. Just as birds, people of the same kind accompany each other.

I grew up with my father’s old saying of “birds of a feather flock together” as a guiding rule for judging my acquaintances and friends. But in this day and age I only have to watch the birds or listen to the flock of crows in tree, to know the truth of father’s saying related to birds as well as people. I realize my father had wisdom and was only trying to teach me a very important lesson in life. Not only do birds of a feather flock together but it is important that I harness the skills to pick the right friends in this world. He also advised that your ability to pick friends who are trying to be successful in this world could be a key ingredient to you being successful in this world! Live your life inspiring others and being a role model.

"Of a feather’ means with the same kind of feathers; and `Birds of a feather’ are birds of the same kind. So birds of the same kind naturally go together, and do not live with birds of other kinds.Crows flock together with crows, sparrows with sparrows, and pigeons with pigeons. But the proverb, although it mentions only birds but technically used for humans.

There are different kinds of nations in this world speaking the same language and having the same customs and ways of thinking, the people of one nation understand each other better than they do foreigners. But within the same nation people are again divided into classes-the rich and the middle class and the poor. Rich people find most of their friends in their own class; they have little to do with the middle classes, who from their own society; and these again do not mix much with the door, who keep to themselves. Again, we divide people according to their moral characters-some are good others are bad; some are honest and industrious, while others are lazy and dishonest. These classes will keep apart. In brief, fools always avoid the company of scholars, writers and poets whose friends are educated men and women. The English saying: “Birds of a feather flock together” exemplifies this truth.

You can see this in action in so many instances. Groups of people all thinking, doing and sometimes even saying the same things, all seem to appear in the same places, together! Some of these groups are doing positive things  and some negative and there are a whole range of groups in between. You can usually notice these birds of a feather all agreeing with each other about some crazy thing and of course also agreeing they are right about whatever that crazy thing is!. they are more comfortable being with people who they have something in common with... anyway, it's not only about having things in common it's more like having the same background. You will always notice that people who have the same liking, interest, hobbies or preference are always found together. They like to participate in the same kind of activities or talk about their common pursuits and so you will always see them together.

Personally, I think I'd be a great white pelican. Just gliding along the sea breezes diving in for a fish every now and then. Spending time communing with a few of my fellow pelicans, but then taking time out to relax on a pier or mooring and bask in the sun.

Life is good and blessed!
