Ester CH3COOC2H5

Explanation:

Ester is the chemial ethyl ethanoate CH3COOC2H5. It is a compound derived from an acid in which at least one –OH group is replaced by an –O–alkyl group. Usually, esters are derived from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol through a process called esterification.

When alcohol reacts with carboxylic acid in presence of an acid catalyst and heat, we get ester and water. This reaction is a reversible reaction. It is a condensation reaction and so water molecules are eliminated during the reaction.

Structural formula of acid is RCOOH where R is a monovalent and COOH is the carboxyl group.

Example: Acetic acid CH3COOH

Structural formula of alcohol is ROH where R is an alkyl group and OH is the functional group of all alcohols called hydroxyl group.

Example: Ethyl alcohol or ethanol C2H5OH

Esterification:

Acetic acid + Ethyl alcohol --> ethyl acetate ester + water

CH3COOH + CH3CH2OH --> CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O
