Explanation:

The Golgi apparatus, also known as the Golgi complex, Golgi body, or simply the Golgi, is an organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. Part of the endomembrane system in the cytoplasm, it packages proteins into membrane-bound vesicles inside the cell before the vesicles are sent to their destination.

Structure of Golgi complex

Golgi complex is made up of four parts -

(1) Cisternae :

\bigstar These are flat disc shaped, sacs like structures many cistenae are arranged. Diameter is 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm.

\bigstar Varied number of cisternae are present in Golgi complex.

\bigstar Concave surface of cisternae which is towards the nucleus is called eis- face or forming face.

\bigstar Concave surface of cisternae which is towards the membrane is called Transface or maturing face

\bigstar The cis and trans faces of the organelle are entirely different but inter connected.

(2) Tubules :

\bigstar These are branched and irregular tube like structures associated with Cisternae.

(3) Vacunles :

\bigstar Large spherical structures associated to tubules

(4) Vesicles :

\bigstar Spherical structures arise by budding from tubules. Vesicles are filled with secretory materials

Functions of Golgi complex

\bigstar The golgi apparatus principally performs the function of packaging materials.

\bigstar Golgi apparatus is the important site of formation of glycoproteins and glycolipids.

\bigstar Cheif function of golgi body is secretion of macromolecules.

Secretion involve three steps :

1) Golgi body recieves the materials from E.R through its cis - face.

2) These materials are chemically modified by golgi body.

3) After chemical modification materials are packed into vesicles. These vesicles are pinched off from trans face of golgi body and discharged out side the cell.
