Placenta is disc like tissue which is present in the mother's uterus and while the baby is developing, this tissue transports water and nutrients from the mother to the baby. Also the waste products from the baby are transferred to the mother through this tissue to be excreted.

Placenta is the structure formed by union of the foetal and uterine tissue for the purpose of nutrition , respiration and excretion of the embryo . Although the blood vessels of the embryo and mother come close but these are kept separate by some barriers between them . The useful substances pass from maternal blood to foetal blood while wastes are passed from foetal blood to maternal blood . The placenta serves primarily as an organ that permits the interchange of materials carried in the blood of mother and foetus . The main function of placenta are :

Supply of nutrients material to foetus

Supply of oxygen and recievance of CO 2 back from foetus

Nitrogenous waste products escape thorough placenta

Stores fat , glycogen and iron for implantation

Secretes extra ovarian hormones....
