Chain silicates can also have double strands. The double chain silicates are also known as amphiboles.

The structures of pyrosilicates and chain silicates are discussed below:

Pyrosilicates: Alternatively called sorosilicates, which are compounds having two silicate tetrahedral structures, where each of them has a silicon atom at the centre and four oxygen atoms situated at the corners of the tetrahedron.

Chain silicates: Also called inosilicates. These are also tetrahedral structures containing silicon and oxygen atoms in the backbone , with the number varying in single chain and double chain silicates.

Single chain silicates have silicon and oxygen atoms in the ratio of 1:3 whereas double chain silicates have their ratio as 4:11.
