The mitochondria perform the function of generating energy required by the cells, therefore, these are called power house of the cell. The mitochondria was discovered by a scientist named ko liker in 1880. It was given name by benda.
The mitochondria is a double membrane bound organelle. The outer membrane is smooth and plain, while the inner membrane has finger like projections,or folds towards central cavity, these folds are called Cristae.
