Answer :

Gieve Patel has set a irony-plot at the very outset. The poem is about the cutting down of a tree.

The first stanza holds the substance of the meticulous task of killing a tree. It holds the whole fact of the growth of a tree. A tree takes much time to grow, to stand against the natural disasters. It has grown slowly consuming the earth. It finds it's subsistence from earth. It has absorbed sunlight years after years. It has taken air, water days after days. After a long effort, it has it's leaves and branches sprouted out.
