Answer:

On a fine August morning in 1896, in a dentist clinic, a very pretty woman of eighteen is seen holding a glass of water in her hand. She is trying to bear her pain. The dentist, a handsome young man of about thirty, watches her with the self-satisfaction of a successful operator.

The young lady thanks the dentist handing him the glass. The dentist putting the glass on the narrow self said that it was his first tooth operation. The young lady with a sense of fear asks him if he had begun his practice on her. Upon this the dentist replied that every dentist began with somebody. The young lady retorted that somebody is in the hospital not on the people who paid. The dentist made it clear that hospital was not counted. He only meant that it was the first case in his privated practice.

Thereafter the dentist asked her why she not allowed him to give her gas. She replied that she refused gas because he asked five shillings extractor it. The dentist felt shocked that he had hurt her for the sake of five shillings.

She got up and commented that to hurt someone was the dentist’s profession. He chuckled secretly and proceeded to clean and replace his instruments. In the meantime the young lady went to the window and looked around. She asked so many questions to him. She enquired of his furniture, his family members and his marital status. The dentist let her that the furniture belonged to the landlords, he was not married and other members of his family were not in the premises.

She asks the dentist whether he charges five shilling for everything. The dentist replies in affirmative. When he is asked why he says that it is his system. Hearing this she takes out a coin of five shillings and gives it to hi and asks to make a hole in it and wear it on his watch-chain. The dentist pay her thanks.

The young lady is a parlour-maid. She lives with her brother, philip. Valentine, the dentist, visits her. She introduces him to her brother. She talks how they met and became good friends.

In a short while all the three start a long debate. The topic is culture, civilization, attitudes etc. They talk about the good and bad effects of the 20 century. Brother and sister talk about their mother, her writings and attitude towards life with the dentist. They ask Valentine for lunch with them. He refuses to take lunch with strangers. The discussion continues. A sense of . humour covers the whole discussion. All these three characters are witty and lively
