A Legend of the Northland is is the poem which is composed by Phoebe Cary. This poem tells the story of an old women who angered Saint Peter because of his greed and selfishness. This story is of the Northland area. The area which is near the North Pole.
One day Saint Peter the apostle of Jesus Christ was preaching around the world and reached the door of the cottage where a women lived. She was baking cakes on a hearth. St Peter was hungry and fainting. He ask the lady to give him a piece of a cake. The cake which she was baking then appeared to be big. So she decided to bake another cake for him. That also appeared to be big and she did not gave him that also. In the second attempt she baked another smaller cake but felt that it was too big to give away. In the third attempt she took a very small dough and rolled in flat. It was as thin as a wafer but she was reluctant to give that cake to the saint. This angered St Peter a lot. He said that she was not fit to live in human form and enjoy food and warmth. He cursed her and transformed her into a woodpecker.
After St. Peter curse the little women went up through the chimney and got changed into a woodpecker, who had to bore in hard, dry wood to get it's scanty food. Her whole body turned to coal black because of going up through the chimney. Her red cap turned to a red plumage of the woodpecker. After that people have been seeing her in the wood all day where she lives by boring and boring the dry wood in search of food.
