Introduction

'The Snake Trying' by W.W.E. Ross brings out the irony that human beings try to kill The snake out of fear of death by its poisonous bite. The victim, that is, the snake, on its part, flees out of fear of death when it is attacked. The fear of death is common to all living creatures. Moreover, the poet wants to underline the fact that all snakes are not poisonous. The water-snake is often harmless. It need not be hit and killed. It is a beautiful creature and has much the right to live as we have.

The snake hit with a stick

The post sees a beautiful water snake lying on the sand. Obviously, it is not poisonous. But someone chases it with a stick. Sensing the danger it curves it's thin long body and tries to escape at once. It glides through the water gracefully. It will go through the water and hide in the leaves.

The snake is harmless

The colour of the snake is green. It looks beautiful and graceful. This small creature attracts the poet who feels that the snake is harmless, even to children. So it should not be attacked. It should be allowed to go through the water and hide itself among the reeds.

Message

'The Snake Trying' conveys the message that we should be compassionate towards animals. We should not be cruel, especially out of irrational fear of certain animals like snakes. We should keep in mind that all snakes are not poisonous. Even those snakes who are poisonous need not be attacked or killed if we are not in danger of being bitten. They have also the right to live. God has created all living creatures, and each of them fits well in His scheme of things.
