The Night of the Scorpion" recounts the night the speaker's mother was bitten by a scorpion. The townspeople try to help her by following superstitions and explaining that the bite cleanses her soul or relieves the amount of pain in her next life. The speaker's father listens to their advice despite being skeptical. By the poem's end, as the mother's pain has subsided, she says she is grateful it happened to her and not her children.
