Springtime A La Cart'' is a short story written by O. Henry and first published in 1906. It opens with the narrator telling us ''It was a day in March'' and then telling us to never start a story like that because it is ''unimaginative.'' However, for this story, it works. After this brief comment, we are introduced to a girl named Sarah, who is crying over a restaurant menu. She isn't crying over her food, or lack of. In fact, this is the mystery in the first part of the story.

Sarah is having a hard time finding work, but she found a job writing the menu for this restaurant since the original was ugly and terribly written. In exchange for this work, she was given three meals a day from the restaurant. On cold days, she has something to eat. Speaking of which, springtime should be here by now, but it's not.

Sarah sits in her room reflecting on how she fell in love with a farmer's son, Walter. They agreed to marry at the first sign of spring, and then it finally happens—Sarah sees dandelions, the symbol of spring, on the menu—and she still hears nothing from Walter. This is why she is crying. Spring is all around and Walter has sent no letter.

After she finishes her work for the day, she reads a book and sets it down when she hears the front doorbell ring. Since she is renting the room, the landlady answers it. It turns out to be Walter who has been searching for Sarah for two weeks. He has finally found her because, when he stopped in to the nearby restaurant, he read the menu and saw, ''Dearest Walter, with hard-boiled egg.'' Sarah had written that line, replacing the dandelions that should have been there with her thoughts of Walter.
