The story is about Mr. Higgins, an antique shop owner and his new shop assistant, Tom.

On his first day at the shop, when Mr. Higgins was away, Tom manages to sell a few things at good price. He quotes his price to customers based on what Mr. Higgins had paid for them, which was scrawled on small labels stuck to the bottom of each piece.

A lady who bought a picture, wanted to buy a vase. In his eagerness to make a profit, he misread the price written by his boss, which was only 1 pound 10 pence and quoted 110 pounds. When the customer offered 100 pounds, Tom refused as he did not want to sell at a loss.

Upon Mr. Higgin’s return, he narrated this incident and realised to his horror that he had missed a sale worth 98.9 pounds profit!
