Robert Frost’s poem ‘Mending Wall’ is an example for his own
theory ‘ A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom. ‘ Frost starts
his poem in a delightful way saying that there is something that does
not like a wall. He does not say what that something is. The poem
ends with his wise saying ‘ Good fences make good neighbours.’
In ‘Mending Wall’, the poet portrays the attitude of two
neighbours regarding the necessity of walls and fences. The two
voices in the poem represent the clash between tradition and
modernity. The wall in the poem symbolizes the deliberately created
barriers among people and between countries.
The poet who is young points out that even nature is opposed
to the idea of walls as it is pushing the wall down, which makes it
necessary for them to mend it. He argues that there is no need of a
wall as he grows apple and his neighbour grows pine trees. He also
says that walls are necessary only where there are cows. But the
poet’s neighbour who belongs to the older generation only says “
Good fences make good neighbours.”
The poem is rich in meaning and symbolism. The poet makes
effective use of poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, alliteration
and repetition .Frost reminds us of the need for fraternity and
tolerance.
