There are three types of mean we learn in school.

The followings are three types:

1. Arithmetic Mean
2. Geometric Mean
3. Harmonic Mean

1. Uses of Arithmetic Mean

We use it in finding average quantities or increasing numbers.

For example, when we find the mean value of $x-2$, $x-1$, $x$, $x+1$, the average is that goes in the middle.

2. Uses of Geometric Mean

We use it in finding the average interest in banks or growth rate.

3. Uses of Harmonic Mean

We use it in finding the average speed.

For example, if the speed of both students is 7km/h and 9km/h, the average speed is $\dfrac{8}{63}$ km/h.

The reason the harmonic mean is used here is that two students ran equal distances, since $\mathrm{speed=\dfrac{distance}{time} }$.

This goes same for the speed of workers, since $\mathrm{work\:rate=\dfrac{amount\:of\:work}{time} }$.
