Bahadur Shah Zafar was only a king in name as he had no real power, but even that was devalued when the then British viceroy, Lord Dalhousie, declared that the King's (Bahadur Shah Zafar's) successor would not be allowed to stay in the Imperial Palace, the Red Fort. Later, Lord Canning, declared that the King’s successor would not be allowed to use the Imperial title of king. These hurt the Muslims' sentiments considerably.
