Formation Of Stationary Wave

Standing wave is also called stationary wave, combination of two waves moving in opposite directions, each having the same amplitude and frequency. The phenomenon is the result of interference that is when waves are superimposed, their energies are either added together or cancelled out.

The necessary condition for the formation of a stationary wave is that the length of the rope must be an integral multiple of the wave length of the wave.

Therefore,

l = n λ

Where 'n' is a positive integer.

Length of string= L Wavelength= λ Two necessary conditions for transverse standing/stationary waves:- (1) The wave must have nodes and antinodes. (2) L=n(λ/2), here n= natural numbers(1,2.3,4,...).
