Decomposition reaction is a reaction in which a compound splits up into two or more simpler substances.
It is opposite to combination reaction.
There are three types of decomposition reaction :
• Thermal decomposition reaction : The reaction in which a compound splits up into two or more simpler substances by heating.
Example : MgCO3 ===> MgO + CO2
• Electrolysis : The reaction in which a compound in aqueous solution or molten state is decomposed on passing electricity.
Example : 2 H2O (l) ===> 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g)
• Photolysis : A compound when decomposed in presence of sunlight forming simpler substances.
Example : 2 AgCl ===> 2 Ag + Cl2
