Jute is the second most important vegetable fiber after cotton due to its versatility. Jute is used chiefly to make cloth for wrapping bales of raw cotton, and to make sacks and coarse cloth. The fibers are also woven into curtains, chair coverings, carpets, area rugs, hessian cloth, and backing for linoleum.

"Jute is one of the most affordable natural fibers. It is composed of the plant materials cellulose and lignin. Jute is losing its importance because:

A.It has decreased strength when wet.

B.It becomes subject to microbial attack in humid climate.

C.It becomes yellow in sunlight.

D.It has poor crease resistance, brittleness and fibre shedding.

E.Jute products are not sustainable like plastic."

The uses of jute are as follows -

• The the fibre of jute is used to make strong ropes and these ropes are used for different purposes.

• The jute fibre is also used for making sacks, doormat etc.

• The jute fibre is now widely used for making decorative things like carpet, chair & table coverings etc.

The jute is losing it's market in India because -

• The cheap replacement of jute is now available due to the arrival of plastic in the consumer market. High grade plastic is more durable ,light weight and cheap than the normal jute.

• The jute production is dependent on seasonal cultivation,so the huge market demand of India isn't getting fulfilled by the jute. Whereas, the plastic is easy to manufacture and it's gaining popularity against the jute.
