Thermal Power plants use fossil fuels (like coal) as the main source of producing energy. Coal being a fossil fuel is a non-renewable source of energy and is responsible for more than half of world's energy production.
The main factors which are responsible for location of thermal power stations are
proximity to water supply for coolants
proximity to major cities for efficient power transmissions and better connectivity
depending upon power consumption
Basic units of a thermal power plant are:
1. Fuel
2. Boiler
3. Turbine
4. Electric Generator
..
Advantages:
It can be located near industry.
Transportation cost will be less as they can construct near industry.
Set up cost is less.
Production method is easy.
and
Disadvantages:
High amount of coal is used to generate steam.
It takes a long time in set up.
Its maintenance cost is high.
It pollutes near by area
