The art of balancing hormones in men.

Assuming you have some basic understanding of math, you can easily figure out how many millimeter there is in 0.1 km (10000). Or how many milliliter there is in 15 liter (15000).

Ask someone who isn’t deeply into measuring land or something, how many feet 0.1 mile is. I live in England since 24 years, and I couldn’t say for sure (It’s 528, I looked it up).

I can calculate that 0.1 mile is 160 meter, and there is 3.3 feet per meter, so a little more than 500ft, give or take a little bit.

How many ounces in 5 gallon? Hmm, there’s 20 ounces to a pint, 4 pints to a gallon, so that makes 80 ounzes per gallon, so 400 ounzes. That’s of course if it’s Imperial (UK) gallons, and not US gallons - then it’s 16 ounces per pint - so 5 x 4 x 16 = 320.

And how many cubic inches in a gallon? 231 according to google. But google didn’t realize I’m in the UK, where a gallon is a bit larger, so it’s actually, here 277.419 - probably OK to round to 277 or 277.4 - but it’s not even a whole number, never mind one that is easy to remember or easy to multiply or divide by.

Fractional inches is another thing that is really confusing. If you try your 1/2″ spanner, and it’s a bit loose, do you need a 3/8″ or a 9/16″? [Correct answer is 3/8″ - or possibly a 7/16″, but it’s not immediately obvious unless you think about it]. If your 13mm is too loose, you go for 12 - or perhaps 10 if it was quite a bit oversize.

What drill size do you need for an M6x1 mm thread? 5mm, because 6mm - 1mm thread depth = 5mm. A 1/4″-20? 20 threads per inch is 0.05″, so 1/4″= 0.25 - 0.05 = 0.200. Unfortunately, there’s no 1/5″ drills, you need the 13/64″ one, which is slightly oversize at 0.2031″ - or the #7 drill is just a little too big at 0.201″ - a #8 drill will probably also work, at 0.199″ - obvious, isn’t it? Three choices, none of which are right. [And yeah, if your drills aren’t in 0.05mm steps, you have to compromise by 0.05mm for the common sizes of M8 x 1.25, 6.75 becomes 6.7 or 6.8 and M12 x 1.75 = 10.25, which becomes 10.2 or 10.3]

In SI units for common measures (lengths, areas, volumes, etc), everything is multiples of 10, 100, 1000 etc. The only exception is time, which of course is 24 or 1 hours, 60 minutes per hour and 3600s per hour (making 86400 seconds per 24h - I know this by heart).

[Edit: Can’t count, so I gave a bit more than three examples! :)]
