Carbon has a unique set of properties. Carbon is mostly responsible for this behaviour because of:

1. The small size of the atom
2. High electronegativity
3. High ionisation enthalpy
4. Unavailability of d-orbital’s

• The amount of carbon in the atmosphere and crust of the earth is very low. The earth's crust has only 0.02 per cent carbon in the form of minerals (such as carbonates, coal, and hydrogen carbonates), and the atmosphere contains only 0.03 per cent carbon in the form of carbon dioxide.
• Even though there is just a limited quantity of carbon in nature, it is the most important element in chemistry. Organic chemistry (chemistry of carbon-containing compounds) and inorganic chemistry (chemistry of non-carbon-containing compounds) must be separated in the discipline of chemistry.
• It’s very surprising but as evident from the name itself, organic chemistry is also the chemistry of organic (or living) things and all living or organic things have carbon in them.
