• Some examples of bases are: NaOH, KOH etc.

Chemical properties of Bases:

1) Reaction with acids:

Acid + base → Salt + Water

Examples:

NaOH + HCL → NaCl + H2O

Ca(OH)2 + 2HCL → CaCl2 + 2H2O

2) Reaction with metals:

Some metals react with bases to liberate hydrogen gas.

Examples:

2NaOH + Zn → Na2ZnO2 + H2

2NaOH + 2Al + 2H2O → 2NaAlO2 + 2H2

3) Reaction with non-matal oxides:

Bases react with non metal oxides to produce metal salt + water.

Examples:

2NaOH + CO2 → Na2CO3 + H2O

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
