Answer :

Diamond and graphite are both gaint covalent substances made entirely of carbon atoms. Both have chemical formula, but they do not have a molecular formula.

Difference between graphite and diamond?

Diamond :

  • Gaint covalent structure, with each carbon cavalently bonded to four other carbon atoms in a tetrahydral arrengment to form a rigid structure.
  • Extrimely hard. Due to rigid tetrahydral arrengment of carbon atoms.
  • Insulater. Mobile electrons are absent. All four valence electrons are used in covalent bonds.

Graphite :

  • It is also gaint covalent structure, with each carbon cavalently bonded to three other carbon atoms in a hexoganal arrengment.
  • Soft. Layers of hexoganally arrengment carbon atoms can slide over one other.
  • Conductor. Three out of four valence electrons are used for covalent bonding with other carbon atoms. Remaining valence electrons can be delocalised across the planes of carbon atoms.
