Acid
Acid release H+ ions
Acid turns blue litmus to red
Acids are sour in taste

Base
Base turns red litmus to blue
Base are soapy in touch
Bases are bitter in taste

Dissolve metal oxide in water, this will give Hydroxide ions in the solution.

Now you can use Litmus Paper or pH paper to check whether the solution is acidic or basic.

Litmus paper will turn blue or the pH paper will show the colour for basic solution .

This shows that the metal oxide is basic in nature.

Reaction are as follows
CaO + H2O ---> Ca(OH)2

ACIDS:

The Ph level is 1-6

All basic oxides are acidic in nature

examples of acids are sulphuric acids, nitric acids etc

They are corrosive in nature

It turned blue litmus red and had no change on red litmus paper

BASES

The Ph level is 7-14

All metal oxides are basic in nature

example of bases is sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide etc.

They are slippery to touch

It turns red litmus blue and had no change on blue litmus paper.

b)The oxide ions in a metal oxide generally react with water to form hydroxide ions which are basic in nature (OH-). Here's a complete reaction example : ZnO + H2O + 2 OH- --> Zn(OH).

I hope this helps u
