Three rules for writing chemical formula

  1. Identify the cation and anion present in the chemical for which the formula must be written. Write down the ions with their respective charges.
  2. Balance the charges by criss-cross multiplication such that the cation receives the charge of anion and vice-versa.
  3. Write the cation first followed by the anions.

For example to write formula for Potassium sulfide:

  1. The cation is K^+, whereas the anion is S^{2-}.
  2. Upon criss-cross multiplication of charges, the cation gets the charge of 2 whereas the anion gets the charge 1.
  3. When the cation is written first followed by the anion, the formula of compound Potassium sulfide is found to be K_2S
